In this article, we publish a handy guide on the do’s and don’ts of correct use of a diamond blade in order to reduce the chances of suffering a work-related injury.

What are diamond blades?
A diamond blade is a saw blade with diamonds fixed on its edge for extra durability when cutting hard or abrasive materials. They are an extremely useful tool in the construction industry but can also be quite dangerous.

How to operate a diamond blade safely
Always inspect the blade before commencing use. If this is the first time you intend to use the blade, ensure it has not been damaged in transit. If you have used the blade before, inspect the blade for damage which may have arisen as the result of previous use.
Check the mounting flanges for equal diameter, excess wear, or flatness. Mounting flanges must have adequate relief around the arbor.
When wet cutting, ensure that all fluids are kept at the correct level and there is a continuous supply of water to each side of the blade.
As always, wear proper safety attire when operating the diamond blade. Adequate safety attire and equipment is an essential part of Health and Safety in the workplace and its importance can never be overstated. Ensure that you wear proper eye and ear protection and protective shoes. You should also consider wearing a helmet.
What to avoid when using a diamond blade
When dry cutting, never use a blade that has been specifically designed for use with wet cutting only.
Do not exceed the maximum operating speed as recommended by the manufacturer.
Never operate a diamond blade without using a correctly fitted blade guard.
Do not make long continuous cuts with a dry blade. Allow the blade to cool by turning in air every 10 to 15 seconds.
Do not use the blade to cut material that has not been specified by the manufacturer.
Do not attempt to cut curves or radii.
Follow this handy guide, and you can help to reduce the chances of a work-related accident when using a diamond blade.
